Luminosa

aroma · USA

An Oregon State variety grown from an open-pollinated Sorachi Ace seed, released through Indie Hops. Peach-mango lemonade, candied orange peel and boysenberry, with the Sorachi citrus intensity but none of the parent's dill and lemongrass. Its defining trait is what it lacks: zero farnesene and no resinous or piney character at all.

About

Luminosa was bred at Oregon State University by Shaun Townsend and released through Indie Hops, the same programme and proprietor behind Strata. It grew from an open-pollinated seed off a Sorachi Ace female in 2013, and inherits that parent's striking citrus while adding fresh tropical fruit. The structural point of difference is an absence: measured farnesene is 0% and the variety is described as almost completely void of resinous or piney character. It is a pure fruit hop, so a recipe that needs a dank or resinous axis has to source it elsewhere in the bill. Best used in whirlpool and dry hop, where the fruit expression is strongest.
