Mandarina Bavaria

aroma · Germany

A German aroma variety from the Hüll breeding programme, bred from Cascade. Distinctly mandarin and sweet orange, tipping into confected citrus at higher rates. One of the clearest routes to a candied-orange character without reaching for a fruit addition.

About

Mandarina Bavaria is one of the Hüll 'flavour hop' releases developed to give German growers varieties that could compete with American aroma hops. It descends from Cascade and carries an unusually specific citrus signature: mandarin and sweet orange rather than the grapefruit that dominates most US varieties. Moderate alpha at 7–9% makes it a late-addition hop rather than a bittering one. It responds well to yeast contact, and the citrus reads brighter and more confected after fermentation than it does from a straight whirlpool charge alone.
