Tasting notes

Same base APA as August 2025. Replaced Kohatu and Strata with Nelson Sauvin hop oil for whirlpool and dry hop — an experiment in hop oil vs pellet delivery.

About This Beer

Same grain bill and hot-side hop schedule as Owen’s August 2025 APA: Ale Malt, Vienna and Supernova, with Nectaron bittering at 60 and 10 minutes. The experiment is entirely on the cool side.

Instead of pellet Kohatu and Strata in the whirlpool and dry hop, this batch runs Nelson Sauvin hop oil, 2 ml in the whirlpool and 2.5 ml dry hopped on day 5.

Hop oils are a concentrated extract: they carry the aromatic compounds without the vegetal matter, and add no isomerised bitterness. Using 2 to 2.5 ml in place of 100 g or more of pellets, on a base recipe that is otherwise unchanged, makes this a direct comparison of delivery method.

Matt was trialling the same Amplifier oil range around this time, on October Hazy three weeks earlier.
