Tasting notes

Nice APA style, good head retention, not too bitter. Nectaron, Kohatu, and Strata work well together — tropical fruit and citrus across the board.

About This Beer

A variation on an American Pale Ale Owen first brewed in 2020, originally a Panhead Supercharger clone from Home Brew West in Auckland. It has drifted a long way from that starting point: Vienna and Supernova in place of Light Crystal and Toffee, Nectaron, Kohatu and Strata in place of Simcoe, Centennial and Citra, and BRY-97 in place of US-05.

The grain bill stays simple. Ale Malt as the base, Vienna for sweetness and body, Supernova for a touch of colour and complexity. Hops run across all four stages, with Nectaron in the boil and the full trio in both the whirlpool and a day-4 dry hop.

Fermentation

Dry hopped on a gravity trigger, with pressure raised slowly to 6.5 psi alongside a temperature rise to 22°C. By day 7 pressure was up to 18 psi. Cold crashed over days 11 to 14 to 6.8°C, finishing at 12.6 psi, which is 2.4 volumes.

Bottled 1 September 2025.

How it turned out

Good head retention, balanced bitterness, tropical and citrus hop character. A reliable, well-balanced APA.
